Setup and Integration

Enable DISH Skill

  1. After completing the initial set-up instructions that came with your device, open the Amazon Alexa app on your smartphone and select the MENU icon in the top left corner. (For help with your device’s initial set-up prior to integrating with DISH, contact Amazon.)
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select TV & Video.
  4. Scroll to the DISH skill and select the + sign.
  5. Select Enable Skill.

If this is a new receiver, you will see Disable Skill instead. Select Disable Skill, then either select Enable Skill to integrate with the new receiver, or leave it disabled if you no longer want Alexa integration with the receiver.

Integrate with DISH Receiver

  1. On your DISH remote, press the MENU button once or the HOME button twice, depending on your remote. Note: If you're trying to connect Alexa to a Joey, perform the following setup steps from the Joey’s linked Hopper – Joey receivers do not have an Alexa icon in their on-screen menus.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Amazon Alexa.
  4. Select Get Code.
  5. Enter the code shown on the screen into the Alexa app, then select Activate.
  6. Select Done on your TV screen, and select Next in the Alexa App.
  7. Select the X at the top of the window to close the window and wait for Alexa to discover the DISH receiver.
  8. Select the desired Hopper, Joey, or Wally receiver from the list. Then select CONTINUE.
  9. Select the desired Amazon Alexa device and select LINK DEVICES.
  10. Select LINK ANOTHER DEVICE to pair another Alexa-enabled device to another receiver, or Return to DISH to finish.

Your DISH receiver and Alexa-enabled device are now paired, and you can use voice commands to control your DISH viewing experience.

Voice Commands

Get acquainted with a few common phrases and commands to help you make the most of your TV viewing experience.

Search

Alexa can perform an integrated search that returns results from across multiple platforms such as Netflix, Video on Demand, DVR, and the Guide, when applicable. You can search by program name, genre, or actor name criteria.

After Alexa retrieves your search results, use your DISH remote to select or play the desired choice.

“Alexa, search for The Big Bang Theory”

“Alexa, show me comedies”

“Alexa, find Tom Hanks movies”

Change the Channel

Change the channel by using a specific channel name or the channel number. Note, many events are still confused with apps or music when using the "play" command. Using "watch" tends to be more successful.

“Alexa, tune to HGTV”

“Alexa, go to channel 112”

“Alexa, watch Property Brothers”

Transport Controls

Alexa can enact transport controls like pause, resume, and skip back/forward. The more specific you are with these requests, the better, as phrasing can affect Alexa’s interpretation of your command.

For example, saying “Alexa, stop” may interfere with other commands currently being carried out.

“Alexa, stop recording”

“Alexa, play” or “Alexa, resume”

“Alexa, skip back” or “Alexa, skip forward”

A timeframe can be specified, e.g. 60 seconds. If a timeframe is not stated, the default skip is 30 seconds.

Play a DVR Recording

Alexa will play recorded content from your DVR. This can be a full and complete recording from your Recordings folder, or live TV that has been paused and is buffering – the content must already be recorded for playback to be able to initiate.

“Alexa, play The Walking Dead”

“Alexa, play Fixer Upper”

Navigation Shortcuts

Quickly access your Guide, DVR, Options, Live TV, and On Demand content!

“Alexa, go to On Demand”

“Alexa, go to guide”

Launch Apps

Launch apps like YouTube, Pandora, Game Finder, Weather Channel, and more, with your voice!

“Alexa, launch Game Finder”

“Alexa, go to Pandora”

“Alexa, launch the Weather Channel app”
