Hopper Settings

Accessibility

DISH provides a full suite of accessibility settings on our Hopper, Wally, and Joey receivers.

Audio

This setting allows you to hear programs in other languages. Applicable programs will often display a notice that this feature is available.

 

  1. Press the MENU button once or the HOME button twice, depending on your remote.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Secondary Audio.
  4. Select your desired language preference.

The DISH remote defaults to controlling the TV's volume. This setting allows you to change the default to an auxiliary device. This will only work if the auxiliary device has been programmed to the remote.

 

  1. Press the MENU button once or the HOME button twice, depending on your remote.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Remote Control.
  4. Select Volume & Mute Buttons.

Dolby Digital is a form of audio coding that enables multi-speaker surround sound. This setting allows you to turn Dolby Digital on or off to enable or disable surround sound.

 

Do you have a soundbar? Follow these instructions to connect your soundbar to the television.

 

  1. Press the MENU button once or the HOME button twice, depending on your remote.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Audio Output.
  4. Select Dolby Digital Pass-through.

Volume leveling maintains a consistent audio level during programs and commercials. You may want to disable this setting for movies where differing volume is preferable.

  3. Select Audio Output.
  4. Select Volume Leveling.

Display Preferences

You can customize the appearance of the menus, Guide, and many other screens with a classic or modern look.

  1. Press the MENU button once or the HOME button twice, depending on your remote.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Appearance.
  4. Choose your desired theme preference.

The screen can be adjusted to different aspect ratios. This setting allows you to resize the image to better fit your TV.

 

  1. Press the MENU button once or the HOME button twice, depending on your remote.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select TV.
  4. Select Aspect Ratio.
  5. Select your desired Aspect Ratio preference.

Caller ID pop-ups show incoming calls on the screen while watching a program. This setting allows you to turn these pop-ups on or off. You must have your receiver connected to phone service.

 

  1. Press the MENU button once or the HOME button twice, depending on your remote.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Notifications.
  4. Select Caller ID.

The channel change notification reminds you of your actions during shared viewing sessions. This setting will allow you to turn these notifications on or off.

 

  1. Press the MENU button once or the HOME button twice, depending on your remote.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Notifications.
  4. Select Shared Viewing.

The screen's zoom and formatting may need adjusting depending on the TV model, or your preference. This setting allows you to zoom and format the screen to your liking.

 

  1. From Live TV, press the RED COLOR button or the Options button, depending on your remote.
  2. Select Display Format.
  3. Choose your desired Display Format from the on-screen banner.

You can customize your Menu Language on any Hopper, Joey, or Wally receiver. If you would also like to update your Audio Language, follow the steps above.

 

From English to Spanish

  1. Press the MENU button once or the HOME button twice, depending on your remote.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Menu Language.
  4. Choose your language preference.

 

From Spanish to English

  1. Press the MENU button once or the HOME button twice, depending on your remote.
  2. Select Ajustes.
  3. Select Menú de Idioma.
  4. Select Inglés.

The MoCA quality icon indicates signal strength from Hopper to Joeys. This setting allows you to enable the icon, disable the icon, or change it to Notification Only, which will display the MoCA icon when signal strength drops too low.

 

  1. Press the MENU button once or the HOME button twice, depending on your remote.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Notifications.
  4. Select MoCA Status Icon.
  5. Select your desired MoCA Status Icon preference.

TV resolution affects the clarity of the picture. This setting allows you to set your TV type to its best possible setting in order to see a clearer picture.

 

  1. Press the MENU button once or the HOME button twice, depending on your remote.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select TV.
  4. Select Video Resolution. On a Hopper 3 or 4K Joey, 4K resolution will display as an option.
  5. Select your desired Video Resolution preference.

From the Power Settings screen, you can adjust what happens when the receiver turns on, how long it will idle before going to standby, and when it will reset each day.

 

  1. Press the MENU button once or the HOME button twice, depending on your remote.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Power.
  4. Choose your desired power settings:
    • Power On:
      • Home Screen: the Home Screen will appear when the receiver is turned on
      • Smart Channel: the receiver will tune to the customer's most-watched channel when the receiver is turned on
      • Last Channel: the receiver will tune to the channel the customer last watched before the receiver went into standby
    • Inactivity Standby: how long the receiver will idle before going to standby mode
    • Daily Reset Time: what time the receiver will reset itself each day for updates

The receiver name will display on the TV Activity screen and other screens throughout the Hopper menus. This allows you to name receivers in order to differentiate between devices.

 

  1. Press the MENU button twice or the HOME button three times, depending on your remote.
  2. Select Whole Home.
  3. Select Change Name.
  4. Select Location Name.
  5. Select a name from the drop-down.
  6. Select Enter Name to make a custom name.

When SAT mode reminder pop-ups are enabled, a message will display on screen if the remote is no longer in the correct mode to control your DISH system. This setting allows you to turn these pop-ups on or off.

 

  1. Press the MENU button once or the HOME button twice, depending on your remote.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Notifications.
  4. Select Remote Control Mode Reminder.

The screen's zoom and placement may need adjusting depending on the TV model, or your preference. This setting allows you to place and zoom the screen to your liking.

 

  1. Press the MENU button once or the HOME button twice, depending on your remote.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select TV.
  4. Select Adjust Screen.
  5. Make your desired screen adjustments.
  6. Press the Select button.

DVR Preferences

On the Hopper you can create up to five custom folders to further organize recorded programs. For a folder to appear in the My Recordings menu, there must be recorded content in the folder.

 

  1. Press the DVR button.
  2. Press the RED COLOR or Options button, depending on your remote.
  3. Select Manage Folders.
  4. Select Create New Folder.
  5. Enter your desired name for the folder.
  6. Select Save.

PrimeTime Anytime gives you the ability to record every primetime show on ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC on one tuner during primetime hours each night. This setting will allow you to select which networks and time frames you would like to record PrimeTime Anytime shows. (Not available on Hopper Duo.)

  1. Press the MENU button once or the HOME button twice, depending on your remote.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select PrimeTime Anytime.
  4. Select your desired PrimeTime Anytime preferences.

This setting allows you to apply new timer defaults to future recordings. Current timers will not be altered.

 

  1. Press the MENU button once or the HOME button twice, depending on your remote.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Timer Defaults.
  4. Select your desired Timer Default preferences.

Guide Preferences

Select channels are available in both HD and SD. This setting allows you to enable HD channel viewing only, removing the duplicate SD channel from your guide.

 

  1. Press the MENU button once or the HOME button twice, depending on your remote.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Guide.
  4. Select Hide Duplicate SD Channels.

A favorites list allows you to filter the guide to only your favorite channels to make searching through the guide much simpler.

  1. Press the Guide button.
  2. Press the RED COLOR button or the Options button, depending on your remote.
  3. Select Favorite Channels.
  4. Select Favorite Settings.
  5. Arrow to and select the list of your choice.
  6. Select Edit Name.
  7. Enter your desired name for the list.
  8. Select Save.
  9. Select the name of the list you just created.
  10. Select Edit Channels.
  11. Arrow to and select each desired channel.
  12. Press the CANCEL or Back button, depending on your remote.

Some aspects of the Guide Appearance (text size, color scheme, and channel order) can be personalized in the new interface.

From Guide

  1. Press the Guide button.
  2. Press the RED COLOR button or the Options button, depending on your remote.
  3. Select Guide Appearance.
  4. Choose your desired Guide Appearance preferences.
  5. Select OK.

 

From Settings

  1. Press the MENU button once or the HOME button twice, depending on your remote.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Guide.
  4. Choose your desired appearance preferences.

Parental controls allow you to restrict content with certain ratings, adult channels, and content requiring purchase.

  1. Press the MENU button once or the HOME button twice, depending on your remote.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Parental Controls.
  4. Select your desired Parental Control preferences.

The Promotional Bar is a small bar across the bottom of the guide that recommends shows and movies. This setting allows you to turn this bar on or off and it allows you to choose between showing just tips and tricks or showing all promotional options.

 

  1. Press the MENU button once or the HOME button twice, depending on your remote.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Guide.
  4. Select Notification Banner to choose "Show All" or "Show Tips and Tricks Only".

Restore Settings

Restoring default settings will return your receiver to its standard factory settings.

 

  1. Press the MENU button twice or the HOME button three times, depending on your remote.
  2. Select Receiver.
  3. Select Tools.
  4. Select RESET TO FACTORY DEFAULTS.
  5. Select RESET RECEIVER TO FACTORY DEFAULTS.
  6. Select Yes on the Reset Receiver to Defaults pop-up.
  7. Your receiver will restart.

Restoring your receiver settings will load your saved settings from your remote to your receiver.

 

  1. Press the MENU button twice or the HOME button three times, depending on your remote.
  2. Select Tools.
  3. Select RESTORE SETTINGS.
  4. Select your desired Restore Settings preference.
    • If your receiver was replaced, select RESTORE TO RECEIVER.
    • If your remote was replaced, select RESTORE TO REMOTE CONTROL.
  5. Do not disturb the receiver while changes are taking effect. Allow the receiver to restart.

Setup

  1. Connect the USB cable from the external hard drive to the Wally. (If necessary, connect the external hard drive's power supply to the wall.)
  2. To activate the DVR feature, call 800-333-3474. Select OK on the Attention 499 pop-up.
  3. After you've contacted DISH to activate the DVR feature, select YES to agree to format the EHD on the Warning 865 pop-up. All existing data on the device will be erased.
  4. Select "Yes, format my hard drive" on the Configure External Hard Drive screen (this may take up to 10 minutes).
  5. Select Yes to restart the receiver. The Acquiring Signal 535 pop-up will appear. The Guide Download 330 pop-up will display.

Connecting your receiver to the internet gets you instant access to thousands of TV episodes and movies On Demand, mobile viewing using DISH Anywhere, and popular apps like Netflix.

 

You can always connect an Ethernet cable from your modem or router directly to your receiver to gain access to the internet, or follow one of the flows below to connect via Wi-Fi.

Connect a Hopper, Hopper Plus, or Wally to Wi-Fi

Before getting started, please note that Hopper and Wally receivers must have a wireless adapter connected to the back of the receiver. If connecting a Hopper Plus to the Network, follow the same steps once you select the Hopper Plus settings then DISH settings. This is not required for Hopper Duo, Hopper with Sling, or Hopper 3 models. To purchase a Wireless BB Adapter, visit our store. (A Netgear Model WNDA3100v2 Wi-Fi adapter is the only supported Wi-Fi adapter that allows wireless communication between a wireless internet gateway and a compatible DISH receiver.)

 

  1. Press the MENU button once or the HOME button twice, depending on your remote.
  2. Select Settings.
    • For Hopper Plus: Select DISH Settings.
  3. Select Internet.
  4. Select Wireless Setup.
  5. If your router has Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) enabled, select WPS SETUP and then press the WPS button on your router to connect. If not, continue to the next step to use your Wi-Fi network's password.
  6. Select WI-FI SETUP WIZARD.
  7. Select your desired network from the list.
  8. Select Next.
  9. Enter your wireless network password (case sensitive). If the network is not password protected, the Encryption Setup pop-up will not display.
  10. Select Save.

Connect a Joey to Wi-Fi

All Joey receivers automatically connect to the internet when your Hopper receiver is connected. This allows Joeys access to applications that require an internet connection, like Pandora and Netflix.

 

Enable or disable this feature, known as Bridging, by following these steps on your Hopper receiver:

 

  1. Press the MENU button once or the HOME button twice, depending on your remote.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Internet.
  4. Select Advanced.
  5. Select Bridging.
  6. Select OK on the Attention 1229 pop-up.

  1. Connect the USB cable from the digital Over-the-Air adapter to the receiver.
  2. The Attention 977 pop-up will display. Select Yes to restart your receiver.
  3. The attention 1298 pop-up will display. Select Yes to scan for OTA channels.
  4. Select Find Channels.
  5. Select Scan.
  6. Select Continue.
  7. Adjust what channels you want to appear in your guide, then select Save.

This feature will let you see caller ID pop-ups on your TV.

 

  1. Connect the phone cable to the back of the receiver.
  2. Press the MENU button once or the HOME button twice, depending on your remote.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Select Phone.
  5. Select your desired Phone Settings.

This setting lets you download the most recent software version available to your receiver. If you already have the most current software version, your receiver will let you know.

 

  1. Press the MENU button two times or the HOME button three times, depending on your remote.
  2. Select Receiver.
  3. Select Tools.
  4. Select UPGRADE SOFTWARE.
  5. Select Upgrade Now on the confirmation popup.
    • If you already have the latest software version, the receiver will display a message confirming this.
    • If you do not yet have the latest software version, the receiver will reboot, go into standby, then display another popup message. Do not press any buttons during this process, or it may cancel itself.

Activate Google Nest

  1. Press the MENU button once or the HOME button twice, depending on your remote.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Nest Stream.
  4. Select Get Code.
  5. On your computer or mobile device, go to nest.dishanywhere.com and enter the activation code from the previous step, then select Activate.
  6. Enter your Google Nest credentials or choose an account that's already signed in (this must be the account associated with your Nest account).
  7. Select the Nest devices that you want to pair with your DISH service, then select Done.
  8. Select Allow to grant permission for DISH to access the selected devices.
  9. Reselect your Google account.
  10. Select Allow again to confirm your choices.
  11. On your Hopper, select Done.

 

You will now see a picture from your Nest Doorbell in the bottom right corner of your TV screen when your doorbell is pressed.

Disconnect Google Nest from Hopper

  1. On your computer or mobile device, go to nestservices.google.com/partnerconnections. Note: you must already be logged into the account associated with your Nest devices.
  2. Select Dish Network to manage your connection.
  3. Select Disconnect.
  4. Select OK to remove access to your Nest devices.

 

Your Nest Device is now disconnected from DISH and doorbell notifications will no longer appear on your TV screen. (Notifications will still work in the Nest App.)

Hopper/Wally

  1. On your old receiver, unplug the power cord from the wall. Then, disconnect the cables from your old receiver. Leave the remaining cables connected to the wall/TV.
    • Note: The back of your receiver may look slightly different and/or you may have more cables than those shown here.
  2. Attach the cables to your new receiver. Then, plug the new power cord into the wall.
  3. Follow the onscreen setup instructions. Make sure that your TV is on and set to the proper input.
  4. Place the endcaps on both sides of the old receiver. Then, place the old receiver in the box the new receiver came in.
  5. Close the box. Ensure the flaps are inside the box and the front flap is on the outside. Using only the tape strip provided, seal the box by taping down the front flap within the solid red lines.
  6. Locate the prepaid shipping label on the side of the box. Follow the instructions on the label to attach it to the box. Take the box to a UPS dropoff location. Go to ups.com/dropoff to find a location near you.

Joey

  1. On your old receiver, unplug the power cord from the wall. Then, disconnect the cables from your old receiver. Leave the remaining cables connected to the wall/TV.
  2. Attach the cables to your new receiver. Then, plug the new power cord into the wall.
  3. Follow the onscreen setup instructions. Make sure that your TV is on and set to the proper input.
  4. Package the old receiver by placing it in the provided bubble bag, and then placing it in the box. Place the cardboard tray over the receiver for added protection and then place the old power supply on top.
  5. Close the box by folding the flaps toward the center. Seal the box using clear packaging tape.
  6. Locate the prepaid shipping label on the side of the box. Follow the instructions on the label to attach it to the box. Take the box to a UPS dropoff location. Go to ups.com/dropoff to find a location near you.
